After many years of playing what's known as "friendly" cricket here in upstate NY, Schenectady based Tr-City Cricket Club has made the leap to the big time by joining the Commonwealth Cricket League out of New York City.
For those who don't know, Tri-City Cricket Club has been plying the willow and leather (cricket parlance for hitting a leather cricket ball with a bat made of willow) since the mid 1980's. They started out playing in Cook's Park in Colonie, but over the years, migrated to Schenectady and have been here since the 1990's.
Cricket is a cousin to baseball, and, like baseball is a bat and ball sport. Batsmen score runs, bowlers (the equivalent of a pitcher in baseball) try to get them out. Whoever scores the most runs wins. And no, it doesn't go on for five days (well, the highest level of the game - Test cricket, can have matches that stretch over five days, but only ten countries play at that level, and the USA is NOT one of them! Our matches are MUCH shorter, and in another blog, I'll explain exactly how that works. For now, though, I just wanted to create my first blog entry about cricket celebrating our inaugural season in the Commonwealth League.

I can't believe it's been almost a year since this first blog post. And since no one seems to read this, well, I guess I can add whatever I want.
Tri-City has moved up... again, into the PREMIER division of the Commonwealth League.
Apparently, the league officials were impressed with the level of cricket we have here in Schenectady, and promoted us to the TOP DIVISION.
Of course, with this comes a much higher level of competition, and after a long lay-off and only one outdoor practice, we found ourselves faced with opening day last weekend.
Although the weather was perfect, Tri-City's performance was not. Showing signs of rust from the long, cold winter, the hometown boys only managed a paltry 167 runs vs. a decent bowling attack from Statics CC. This left the visitors with a relatively low total to chase, which they did with almost three overs to spare, earning a three wicket victory, and their second win of the season.
Hopefully next week will prove a better result, as Tri-City host Pak America at Grout Park 12:30 Sunday May 12th. For more info, check out our facebook page... Tri-City Cricket Club.
