I would like to add my support to the conversion of the town highway superintendent from an elected position to an appointed position. As a retired transportation professional with over 50 years of experience in the transportation field, the change has only positive possibilities. Highways are a basic infrastructure element in this town. The coordination of all work within the highway right-of-way (highway, sewer, water, utilities) under unified professional management is just good management of scarce resources. As a taxpayer, I view the projected savings of $170,000 to $350,000 in a different light. If it is going to cost us that amount of money to retain an elected official, what potential benefit do we get that warrants spending that amount of money? I don’t see benefits in that range which justify the cost. I am voting “Yes” to change the position to an appointed official.
